It may be the will of God that Orthodox Mission Board should take a step forward to help the victims of HIV/ AIDS. It was in this perspective that the Mission Board of Orthodox Church decided to begin a rehabilitation centre for HIV/AIDS affected children on Nov 8, 2002.
With all the hard works and efforts the dream came real with the first temporary building of Dayabhavan inaugurated on January 16, 2003.
We started to render our service by enrolling few children of PLHIV's on June 15, 2003.
With a longing for building up a home, a home of compassion, away from their homes, a foundation stone for a new building was laid on October 3, 2004
The firm thought and actions of the team saw light. The new block, Home of Compassion, with all available facilities got inaugurated on 5th of November, 2005
Dayabhavan is located in a beautiful and serene village of Tumkur District of Karnataka State. The majority of the villagers around the centre are economically very backward. Most of them were not even able to afford basic health facilities. This poor state of affair was seen through by the centre and a clinic that avail free medical services was initiated. The clinic began its functioning from the 1st of September 2006.
With all the enthusiasm and energy, Daybhavan decided to break out from the shell and to extend its territory of service beyond the care of HIV/ AIDS affected children to the care and support of the PLHIVs. With this in mind, a new building was inaugurated on the 30th of May 2006. It is a centre with 10 bedded facilities.
With the increasing flow of patients and the increasing demand of services, a new building became the need of the hour. Thus to improve the quality of care & treatment and the services rendered for those poor, the foundation stone for a new 20 bedded Care and Support Block (Both Building Together 30 Bed) was laid on 26th November 2006.
Treatment is required only when sick or diseased whereas food is the pulse of life. The stigma and discrimination towards the poor infected and the affected, especially in the vocational sector, devoid them of their basic necessity of food. This was the next challenge taken up by the institution. And as a beginning, of Income Generation Programmes (IGP), a TTP (Tailoring Training Programme) for both the infected and affected women were launched by the institution. To serve the purpose, a centre was inaugurated in February 2006 at Tumkur. Like all our projects this centre also functions absolutely free for beneficiaries.
Dayabhavan was thrown with a new light to extend its helping hands to HIV infected and affected children (especially girls), whose parents are able to provide moral support at home but are financially unstable. It was a new project that had more focus on the ignored class in the HIV/AIDS scenario, the children – especially girls. This was also a move against the discrimination shown against the affected and infected female children. Now it is the third successful year of the project.
With its years of experience in the realm of HIV/AIDS, the centre decided to be on the move for an authorized Community Care Centre. A proposal for a Community Care Centre (GFATM-6 CCC Project) funded by National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), a department under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Government of India, was submitted to the implementing agency Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT). The proposal was seen through and accepted by KHPT and Daybhavan was thus declared with GFATM -6 (Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria) Community Care Centre Project. The Centre was declared as both a Community Care Centre and a DOTS Provider centre.
With all the prayer and hard works of all the members of our family (Dayabhavan Family), the new block of Community Care Centre became a reality on March 24, 2009. With all our developments benefiting the needy, we always make sure to ensure quality care and treatment service to the PLHIVs. Through the upcoming of the new block, we are now able to provide service to more PLHIVs.
The Sputum Collection and Transportation Programme under RNTCP were sanctioned for the centre in April 2009. This was a new venture of the centre. Since TB is one of the major or mostly affecting opportunistic infection related with HIV/AIDS, this has helped us to improve our service to a bit more higher level. Through the same we make an attempt to trace out the Tuberculosis patients in their early stage and avail DOTS to them.
Seeing the unfortunate children studying in the schools around our area and understanding the hindered growth they had when compared to the children who study in the graded schools, the institution had a motive to make those children competitive. And for the purpose a new project of adoption of school came in on June 2009. Through the project, we provide economic assistance for the poor children in the school. All fees and study materials are provided by the institution.
Dayabhavan was declared as an Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre by KSAPS (Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society) in October 2009. This was a new area of action that was being look forward by the institution. Thus Daybhavan became an authorized, Public-Private partnership, HIV testing centre. Both pre and post test counseling are provided in the process of testing. Though fully sanctioned and authorized by the government’s health department, the ICTC is fully funded by our institution.
The institution had a motive to take up the challenge of rehabilitating HIV infected children. And this challenge became a reality very recently with our maiden attempt, of rehabilitating five infected children. We are now hoping to focus much on the progress of this project.
The institution was sanctioned with Time Of Fast (TOF) project of Y’s men international. It is a project aimed at creating awareness for the general population ………..and also includes provisions for rehabilitation of infected and affected children.
